Islam, one of the biggest religions in the world, began in the Arabian Peninsula. Over 3000 B.C ago, the Arabs have inhabited Arabian Peninsula. However, because of the brutal deserts, the Arabians had to begin its own religion. By overcoming the difficulties and by 500n AD, Arabs settle in oases or fertile valleys and build villages, towns and cities. They soon began to trade with each other. One of the most important valleys in the region was Makah. It was close to the Red Sea and the Red Sea was a good trading route so it was good at trading. Every year, many Arabians would travel to Makah to visit the Kaaba to worship their gods, so Makah became an important part of the Arabia’s economy.
In AD 570, Muhammad was born in Makah. He grew up and went into the hills to meditate. After he came back, he told people to preach Islam. He then returned to Makah. One his way, he told people to destroy the wrong gods statue and only worshipped Allah. He also preached that everyone was equal and the rich should visit the Makah. Some people believed him for he said when the Judgment Day arrived; god would punish the bad and reward the good people.
At first, only his family became Muslims, but some of the poor were attracted by the message of the goods should be shaved soon. However, the rich were unsatisfied with his message, so they beat and tortured his followers. This was a difficulty, so Muhammad had to move to a town named Yathrib. Yathrib was a city only welcomed Muslims, so it was renamed Madinan soon.
People of Madinah accepted Muhammad as God’s prophet and their ruler. He became a real leader, and he built a government to up hold Islam. In AD 630, to defend Makah, he built an army, and then conquered Makah. He then turned Makah into a holy city of Islam. Two years later, he died. Due to his effort, Islam was spread all over Arabia.
